To Keratin or Not to Keratin, that is the question.
We have clients come in all the time wanting to know if we will perform Keratin straightening treatments for them. Fortunately, we respect curly hair enough not to feed in to the hype of non-chemical relaxers. There have been many fake non-chemical relaxers that have come and gone over the years taking lots of beautiful curls with them. This treatment is much like a relaxer and strips away the protective layer of the hair cuticle, leaving your hair limp and lifeless for several months. That is if you are lucky and your natural curl is restored at all.
From my experience with clients who either didn’t seek professional advice before trying the Keratin straightening or those who went to a professional and had the service done and are now experiencing breakage, dryness or lack of curl snap back is to use a deep conditioning treatments every other week to replenish and revive your curls, and always use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Nothing will MAKE your curls come back but time, so patience will be your best friend in this process. Unfortunately, those with kinky hair textures 4a-4c tend to have the worst experience when waiting for their curls to come back. The process is similar to growing out a relaxer, as your natural hair texture returns your choices are to keep up with the Keratin treatment or manage the new growth at the scalp while you wait for your curls to snap back. For anyone who has had to transition before you know that this is a frustrating process. Protective styles are a great way to manage the time that it takes, and causes less breakage because you are not combing your hair as often.
The beauty of naturally curly hair textures is the versatility. Keep your versatility by keeping away from the Keratin and just doing an old fashion thermal straightening.
Loving who you are, Naturally!
